After completion of systems and equipment cold trials at Unit 1 and Unit 2 in a full scope, it was acknowledged that Project B1 equipment at Units corresponds to the Design requirements and is prepared for hot trials performance (using spent nuclear fuel).

The entire sequence of actions that will be performed in the future operation of Project B1 during the fuel transportation from the Power Units to the Storage Facility, were performed during the trials (using no radioactive materials).

Successful completion of cold trials at Units was one of the conditions for obtaining the storage facility’s license for operation from VATESI.

The license for operation will enable preparation for the final milestone – Project B1 hot trials (using spent nuclear fuel).

According to INPP plans, the hot trials of the Storage Facility are due in the end of September 2016. The start of hot trials conditions the beginning of spent nuclear fuel transportation from Units to the Storage Facility. Start of the facility’s operation will follow the successful completion of hot trials.

It is planned to complete the hot trials in summer 2017and to start the industrial operation of the ISFSF in autumn 2017.

New ISFSF will assure safe long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel in dry type CONSTOR RBMK®1500/M2 casks, the fuel is currently being stored at Unit 1 and Unit 2.

The project B1 is financially supported by the Ignalina International Decommissioning Support Fund (IIDSF) managed by the EBRD. The IIDSF is funded by the European Community was well as by Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland.
