A ferry delivered casks from manufacturers in Czech Republic and Germany to Klaipeda port. Then, they were transferred to Ignalina NPP via railways.

Spent nuclear fuel casks were successfully redesigned in accordance with the modified hermetic lid system.

“We have reached the final stage of the project implementation. Today’s achievement demonstrates that any issue can be resolved when the aim is to achieve the common goal. Now that we have received the modified casks, we are able to execute pre-commissioning works with full capacity. This is yet another significant step towards the successful completion of the project.” – said INPP Director General Darius Janulevičius.

The remaining 190 casks should be delivered to INPP by March 2021.

The new CONSTOR®RBMK-1500/M2 casks were designed and manufactured by a German company GNS.

Container modification did not increase the costs for INPP.

At the moment, pre-commissioning works are taking place at INPP Units. These works allow to follow all steps of future commissioning, when actual nuclear spent fuel will be used.

Start of commissioning works using actual spent fuel is planned for the end of 2016. Industrial operation of Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility (ISFSF) is scheduled for the autumn of 2017.  The completion of all spent nuclear fuel delivery to ISFSF is scheduled for 2022.
