EVRAZ Makes First Greenhouse Gas Disclosure Within CDP Framework

In 2014, EVRAZ made its first submission on greenhouse gas emissions to the international voluntary carbon reporting framework, CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), ranking fourth among the companies working in Russia according to the criteria of openness and efficiency in corporate climate reporting and strategies.

“The information we collected for the report allows us to assess the company’s results in enhancing the ecological efficiency and energy efficiency and set out the next steps”, said Michael Shuble, Vice-President, Health, Safety and Environment, EVRAZ. “Besides, disclosures on our green strategy implementation, including those published in annual reports, make the company look more attractive to investors. Sustainable development is one of EVRAZ priorities; we will keep working on making our assets greener and safer in terms of environment protection, making regular public disclosures on the progress we have made”.

Fully aware of how important raising environment awareness is, EVRAZ researches international best practices and upgrades its equipment and technologies on an on-going basis. During the recent furnace overhaul project at EVRAZ NTMK, a resource-efficient pig iron production technology was implemented, cutting the annual greenhouse gas emissions down by 1.88 mln tonnes thanks to a lower coal consumption rate. Moreover, in 2013 EVRAZ NTMK became the first Russian mill to launch a pulverised coal injection (PCI) unit, further reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions. In 2014, the same technology was implemented at another mill, EVRAZ ZSMK. At the same time, annual energy saving programmes, regular maintenance and overhaul of power generation units contribute to reducing the Company’s indirect emissions.
